Paediatric functional capacity assessments

Paediatric functional capacity assessments are designed to identify the supports necessary for children, young people and their families to make progress on identified goals and aspirations.

Children and young people may require a functional capacity assessment when seeking access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), or to review their ongoing need for access to the Scheme. It is important to understand that the NDIS focus on everyday function rather than a diagnosis of an impairment or disability. A common misconception is that a chronic diagnosis or disability alone gets you accepted as a participant in the scheme.

The NDIS provides an opportunity for people living with a disability/chronic condition and their families to receive support to reach goals that will enable greater participation, build capacity, and enable greater independence.

What does a paediatric functional capacity assessment consider?

At Clever Bees, our occupational therapists are trained in identifying the link between your child’s disability/condition and how it affects day-to-day life. It serves to create a complete picture of how a person manages tasks and activities, and the overall impact the disability/condition has on their life.

These reports are comprehensive and include a thorough assessment of functional capacity in the key areas of:

The Clever Bees team will also assist with goal setting that will help make a difference in your life. The report will also greatly influence the decision making by the NDIS around allocation of funds in appropriate categories.

A new NDIS Functional Capacity Assessment Framework was introduced in 2020 with the aim of delivering a more consistent disability assessment. This diagnosis-neutral framework aimed to improve the quality, consistency, and transparency of NDIA decisions and that decisions are directed towards improving functional capacity in the context of a participants’ goals and outcomes. The framework reflects the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.
